Mark Laney, M.D., receives Missouri Hospital Association Distinguished Service Award

Mark Laney, M.D. (PDN ’89), CEO of Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri, was awarded the Missouri Hospital Association’s Distinguished Service Award for his leadership, advocacy and commitment to improving health care in Missouri and nationwide.

The award is the highest given by the Missouri Hospital Association and was presented at the group’s annual convention and trade show in Osage Beach, Missouri.

“Mark’s contribution to an emerging model of medicine, one that looks at the whole person and whole community, has been significant,” says Herb B. Kuhn, Missouri Hospital Association president and CEO. “He sees health care from the perspective of both an administrator and physician, and he has created an environment within Mosaic Life Care that focuses on quality while improving the patient’s experience of care.”

Dr. Laney led the transformation from Heartland Health, which he joined in 2009 as president and CEO, to Mosaic Life Care, and expanded the organization’s emphasis on health care quality and key life elements that affect overall wellness. He also expanded the reach of Mosaic Life Care, connecting the health of the community with the city’s economic and cultural well-being.

Prior to Heartland, Dr. Laney served for 20 years at Cook Children’s Health Care System, including eight as president of Cook Children’s Physician Network. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas in Denton and a medical degree from the University of Texas Medical ranch in Galveston. He completed a fellowship in pediatric neurology at Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education in Rochester, Minnesota. He also has a master’s degree in medical management from the University of Texas at Dallas.

Dr. Laney is a past president of the Mayo Clinic Alumni Association.
