Robert A. Kyle, M.D. (I ’59) to receive national award from the American College of Physicians
Philadelphia, PA — (January 7, 2015) Dr. Robert A. Kyle, MACP (I ’59), a local internist, has been awarded the John Phillips Memorial Award for Outstanding Work in Clinical Medicine by the American College of Physicians (ACP), the national organization of internists. The award will be presented at ACP’s Internal Medicine Meeting 2015 during the Convocation ceremony Thursday, April 30, 2015, at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, in Boston, MA.
A resident of Rochester, MN, Dr. Kyle is a medical researcher at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. The John Phillips Memorial Award was established in 1929 by ACP’s Board of Regents. The award is presented for outstanding work in clinical medicine, and honors Dr. Phillips, a governor and regent of the College.
Dr. Kyle is a member of the Board of the International Myeloma Foundation, and chairs the Scientific Advisory Board. He has served as Chair of the Myeloma Committee of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Grouop, and the Secretary-General of the International Society of Hematology. Dr. Kyle served as President of the International Society of Amyloidosis, and also as President of the International Myeloma Society. Dr. Kyle defined the term “MGUS” and with his colleague, Dr. Philip Greipp, described “smoldering myeloma.” The Special Protein Laboratory was founded by Dr. Kyle, and he collected and recorded serum samples from all people with monoclonal plasma cell disorders at Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Kyle graduated from the University of North Dakota with a bachelor of science degree, and later earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. His postdoctoral training included a residency and fellowship in internal medicine at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He also received a post-doctoral research fellowship at National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health, and a research fellowship in hematology at Tufts University School of Medicine.
