Mayo Clinic again ranks No. 1, receives Quality Leadership Award

Five Mayo Clinic hospitals received the 2018 Bernard A. Birnbaum, M.D., Quality Leadership Award. The award recognizes superior performance as measured by Vizient’s Quality and Accountability Study, which has been conducted annually since 2005. Vizient is a health care performance improvement company in the U.S.

Academic medical centers

• Mayo Clinic Hospital — Rochester ranked No. 1 of 99 academic medical centers

Teaching medical centers

• Mayo Clinic’s Florida campus ranked No. 3.
• Mayo Clinic’s Arizona campus ranked No. 6.
• Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire ranked No. 8.

Community hospitals

• Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing, Minnesota, ranked No. 2 of 93 community hospitals.

The Quality and Accountability Study helps academic medical centers and community hospitals identify structures and processes associated with high performance in quality and safety across a broad spectrum of patient care. The Institute of Medicine’s six domains of care — Safety, Timeliness, Effectiveness, Efficiency, Equity and Patient-Centeredness — were used as a guide in structuring the study criteria.

“We’re grateful five of our hospitals received the 2018 Quality Leadership Award,” says Paula Santrach, M.D. (BLBK ’90), chief quality officer, Mayo Clinic. “This recognizes our staff’s total commitment to patient care and the extraordinary depth and breadth of our medical practice across Mayo Clinic.”

The Quality and Accountability Study includes data from Vizient’s Clinical Database and Core Measures Database, Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Healthcare Safety Network.

“This is the third year in a row our community practice in Red Wing ranked in the top three, and we’re pleased to be No. 2 this year,” says Annie Sadosty, M.D. (EM ’99), regional vice president, Southeast Minnesota region, Mayo Clinic Health System. “Our staff, providers and leadership teams in Red Wing, and those across Southeast Minnesota who support Red Wing, earned this honor. This award validates that patients receive exceptional Mayo Clinic care in our community practices as we invest in world-class expertise, services, technologies and facilities so patients can not only get better, but also live well close to home well into the future.”

This is the first year Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire has received the award.

“To be ranked No. 8 out of 100 complex teaching medical centers throughout the United States is truly an honor,” says Richard Helmers, M.D. (THD ’90), regional vice president, Northwest Wisconsin region, Mayo Clinic Health System. “I’m so proud of our staff who tirelessly work every day to ensure the need of our patients come first.”

The awards were presented on Oct. 4 during the 2018 Vizient Clinical Connections Summit.
