Mark Warner, M.D., receives 2018 Distinguished Service Award from American Society of Anesthesiologists

Mark Warner, M.D. (ANES ’82), Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, received the 2018 Distinguished Service Award from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). This is the highest tribute by the ASA to a member and is given for outstanding clinical, educational and scientific achievement, contribution to the specialty and exemplary service to the ASA. Dr. Warner will receive the award at the ASA’s annual meeting in October 2019 in Orlando, Florida.

Dr. Warner joins previous members of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Mayo Clinic who have received this award include Alan Sessler, M.D. (ANES ’62), in 2001; John Michenfelder, M.D. (ANES ’61), in 1990; and John Lundy, M.D. (ANES ’24), in 1948.

Dr. Warner has served in leadership roles including chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, dean of the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education, and Juanita Waugh Executive Dean for Education of the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He has served as chair of the Anesthesiology Residency Review Committee for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, director and president of the American Board of Anesthesiology, president of the Academy of Anesthesiology, president of the Minnesota Society of Anesthesiologists, and president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He has served the ASA for more than 35 years.

Dr. Warner has received awards including the Distinguished Educator Award from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Medical College of Ohio, Outstanding Career Award from the Resident Component of the ASA, the Ralph T. Knight M.D. Award from the Minnesota Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Alvin Manalaysay Military Anesthesiology Award from the Uniformed Services Society of Anesthesiologists.

Dr. Warner is the Annenberg Professor of Anesthesiology and vice chair for scholarship and career development in the Mayo Clinic Department of Development. He also is a professor of anesthesiology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
