1946 - 2018

James Poston, M.D. (ANES ‘78)

James G. Poston M.D.

Lake Kickapoo

James G. Poston M.D. passed away on July 30, 2018 in his home.

He was born to James and Edna Poston on November 23, 1946 in Kingsport, TN. After graduating from Dobyns-Bennett High School, he attended Wake Forest University. He went on to receive his Medical Degree from the University of Tennessee, after which he completed a residency in Pediatrics at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas. Subsequently, he served in the United States Air Force until being honorably discharged in 1978. Following his service, Dr. Poston completed a residency in Anesthesiology at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He then went on to practice anesthesia in Minnesota, Mississippi, and Vermont.

Jim moved to Wichita Falls, TX in October of 1988 to practice at the Wichita General Hospital, where he worked until the opening of Kell West Regional Hospital in September of 1999. Dr. Poston founded The Red River Anesthesiology Group and acted as the Director of Anesthesiology at Kell West until his retirement in 2016.

He is survived by his wife Traci Poston and son Aaron Poston of Lake Kickapoo, his daughters Rachel Sherman and Ellen Torres, as well as his four grandchildren all of whom reside in Massachusetts.

Jim requested that no funeral services take place, however, he was sent on his final voyage by his immediate family with a Viking Funeral Ceremony?with which we think he would have been most pleased.

There were two main facets of Dr. Poston’s character that defined him, his commitment to the medical field and his unwavering devotion to his family. While often described as appearing gruff or intimidating, those who truly knew and loved him saw beyond his harsh exterior. He was a formidable man, a man of conviction, true to self, loyal, and generous. He was a man who forged his own destiny, and manifested his own vision: “Nothing quite like being at the end of the gravel road, the sanctum sanctorum, the beginning and end of paradise.”

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in his name to Hospice of Wichita Falls.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.lunnscolonial.com.
