W. Michael Hooten, M.D., receives funding for grant, “Unintended Prolonged Opioid Use”

W. Michael Hooten, M.D. (I ’98, PAIN ’04), Division of Pain Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, received funding for his grant, “Unintended Prolonged Opioid Use.”

Intentional short-term use is emerging as a previously under-recognized segue to unintended prolonged opioid use (UPOU). Clinical strategies aimed at preventing OPOU in health care settings are lacking due, in part, to the absence of information about how this poorly-understood clinical phenomenon develops. In Dr. Hooten’s grant, Mayo Clinic, the University of Minnesota, the University of Michigan and Yale University will explore the potential of a secure mobile personal health platform to identify incident cases of UPOU and prospectively recruit patients and opioid prescribers for assessments that will be used to evaluate a proposed conceptual framework of UPOU.

Dr. Hooten is a professor of anesthesiology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
