Margaret Redfield, M.D., receives American Heart Association Population Research Prize

Margaret Redfield, M.D. (I ’87, CV ’91), chair, Division of Circulatory Failure, Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, received the American Heart Association’s Population Research Prize for her epidemiologic work with the population of Olmsted County. According to the AHA, this work has deepened the understanding of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

The award was presented at the AHA’s Scientific Sessions 2019 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

“Dr. Redfield’s epidemiologic work with cohorts in Minnesota allowed her to determine the incidence, prevalence, risk factors and demographics of patients affected by HFpEF, which accounts for half of all those admitted to clinics and hospitals for heart failure,” says AHA President Robert A. Harrington, M.D. “While continuing to do her own research in this important field, she has also helped to train the next generation of cardiovascular investigators. Many of her postdoctoral trainees have gone on to become highly respected cardiologists and independent researchers in cardiovascular science.”

Dr. Redfield is co-director of the Mayo Clinic Cardiorenal Research Laboratory and is a professor of medicine in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
