Matthew R. Brown is first recipient of new NIH KUH Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Fellow Transition Award

Matthew R. Brown (BMS ’14, BME ’15), fourth-year doctorate student at Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, is the first recipient of a new National Institute of Health grant. The competitive KUH Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Fellow Transition Award (F99/K00) aims to recruit talented students and transition them into fellowships dedicated to research relating to kidney, urology or hematology fields. The F99 predoctoral grant will fund research completed during doctorate school in fields not relating to kidney, urology and hematology for up to two years. The K00 portion of the grant funds the student’s research in the three fields during a four-year postdoctorate research fellowship.

Brown, a researcher at Mayo’s Islet Center of Regenerative Medicine, plans to use the grant in part to continue research on pancreatic beta cells before using what he has learned in the kidney research field.
