David R. Holmes Jr., M.D. (CV ’76), has retired with designation to Emeritus Staff. Dr. Holmes had an illustrious career at Mayo Clinic spanning 46.5 years, During his tenure, Dr. Holmes served as an invasive electrophysiologist, interventional cardiologist, director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, president of the American College of Cardiology, and prodigious inventor, including the inventor of the Watchman device implanted more than 100,000 times to prevent strokes globally. Dr. Holmes also is a Mayo Clinic Distinguished Alumni Award recipient (2020). In an interview, Dr. Holmes talked about his career, changes in medicine and the future.
