Guoqian Jiang, M.D., Ph.D. (AII ’06)

Dr. Guoqian Jiang, M.D., Ph.D., passed away peacefully at home on July 13, 2023, at 5:47 P.M. He was born in the village of Lingwu in Ningxia Province, China, on February 20, 1971, to father Yuchuang Jiang and mother Xiaona Lu. He married his college classmate and sweetheart, Dr. Jie Dong, in 1996, and their son David was born in 1997.

Dr. Jiang received his M.D. from Ningxia Medical University in 1992 and an M.S. in Medical Informatics from Beijing Institute of Medical Informatics in 1995. He went on to earn his Ph.D. from Hokkaido University in Japan in 2004 and completed a post-doctoral fellowship sponsored by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.

In 2006, Dr. Jiang was recruited to the Mayo Clinic Department of Artificial Intelligence and Informatics. Since 2019, he had served as a full professor, and in 2020, he was promoted to the position of Consultant. Dr. Jiang began forming his own research team in 2012, focusing on the standardization of biomedical terminologies and clinical data, as well as common data models. Over his 17-year career at the Mayo Clinic, he published more than 200 peer-reviewed research articles. His work had a profound impact on improving the quality and safety of medical care through pioneering electronic health record data and semantic interoperability. He also advocated for medical device safety and effectiveness through the use of real-world evidence. His work will undoubtedly continue to influence and contribute to the standardization of healthcare systems.

Dr. Jiang accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior in 2007. He was a devout Christian and served at the Rochester Minnesota Chinese Church. An avid traveler, he had visited over 32 U.S. states and 17 countries. In his free time, he was an amateur historian and enjoyed cycling. During his illness, he especially enjoyed spoiling his golden retriever, Rafiki.

He is survived by his wife, son, parents, and three brothers. A celebration of life will take place at Timothy Chapel, Autumn Ridge Church, on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at 10:00 AM. The family respectfully requests contributions be made in his honor to the Rochester Minnesota Chinese Church, specifically to help future patients seeking care at Mayo Clinic.
