Wolfgang Singer, M.D. (I1 ’04, N ’07, PND ’08, NEMG ’09), Department of Neurology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, received a 2023 research award from the Minnesota Partnership for Biotechnology and Medical Genomics for the project Towards a Center for Advanced Synucleinopathy Diagnostics (ASCEND): Development and optimization of nanoparticle-enhanced seed amplification assays for blood-based detection of synucleinopathies. The Minnesota Partnership for Biotechnology and Medical Genomics is a collaborative venture among Mayo Clinic, the University of Minnesota and the state of Minnesota that seeks to position Minnesota as a world leader in biotechnology and medical genomics applications that will result in important new medical discoveries that improve healthcare for patients while supporting the development of new businesses and jobs in the state. Dr. Howe’s partner at the University of Minnesota is Sang-Hyun Oh, Ph.D. This project aims to develop accurate and cost-effective blood-based diagnostic tests for the early diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease and multiple-system atrophy. This partnership could revolutionize the way these diseases are diagnosed, potentially leading to better outcomes for patients, significant healthcare savings, and a brighter future for those at risk of diagnosis. Dr. Singer is an associate professor of neurology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
