I presented a paper at the 53rd American Osler Society meeting May 2023 in London, England. I discussed the work of Dr. William Carpenter MacCarty (1880-1964) and his contribution to the diagnostic reliability of fresh frozen sections, 208,255 surgical specimens 1905 to 1928. In fall 2021, I watched as fresh frozen sections are still used at Mayo Clinic, especially important to guide surgical management of lumpectomy in patients with breast cancer. In addition, his team at Mayo described that the nucleoli of a malignant cell is 5 to 7 times larger in volume to its nucleus, and this is still important for the progression of renal clear cell cancers. Furthermore, he formed the Osler Medical Historical Society 1920 to 1925 to honor his teacher Sir William Osler (1849-1919), inspirational to the study of medical history at Mayo Clinic. The Mayo library staff helped me get audio interviews, and copies of his books and papers. In addition, like any large meeting, there were colleagues from Mayo, but it felt great to get my picture, after the conference, in front of our Mayo Clinic branch London, England.
