James Reynolds, M.D. (I ’60)

Reynolds, Dr. James Francis age 93, of Edina, MN passed away December 16, 2023 at Friendship Village in Bloomington, MN. He is survived by his large loving family and wife of 69 years, Isabel; Children: Kevin Reynolds (Laurie Kutchins), Anne DePrey (Dan), Mark Reynolds (Dawn Simone), Thomas Reynolds (Talia Nadir), Elizabeth Santulli (William), Christopher Reynolds (Barbara Johns), Dr. Mary Reynolds, Sarah Brookner (Paul). Grandchildren: Weston and Ava Reynolds; Nicholas, Madelyn (Shuba Fikru), and Victoria (Phillip Berge) DePrey; Benjamin, Gabriel, and Aidan Reynolds; Samantha (Robb Hutchins), Kendall (Patrick Maloney), Peter, Matthew (Mollye Lent), and Anna Santulli; Andrew Reynolds; Ethan and Sean Brookner; Delaney Reynolds; Sara Boyer. Great grandchildren: Madeline, William, Maeve, and Molly Maloney; Henry, Jack, and Ruby Hutchins. Preceded in death by his parents Thomas J. and Loretta Reynolds, and siblings Rita Bowe, Marian Doherty, Patricia Megna, and Thomas J. Reynolds. James F. Reynolds was born at home in East Elmhurst, Queens, New York. He attended Regis High School, a Jesuit institution in Manhattan and the University of Notre Dame on a Naval ROTC scholarship, where he met his beloved wife Isabel. After graduating magna cum laude, he attended the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He completed his medical residency at the Mayo Clinic, developing a specialty in internal medicine. After serving in the Air Force as Chief of Medicine at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, MA from 1960-65, he entered private practice with the St. Louis Park Medical Center as an early member, helping to expand it into the Park Nicollet Medical Center. James had many distinguishing achievements across his career, including an Assistant Professorship at the University of Minnesota Medical School, President of the Medical Staff at Methodist Hospital, Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Park Nicollet Clinic, and testifying before a US Senate Select Committee on Aging in 1981 regarding Medicare reimbursement. James was an active public servant and a generous philanthropist through the years. He was a dedicated member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Edina, a regular contributor to his alma maters, the Mayo Clinic, and a number of prominent charities. After his retirement in 1994, he continued to volunteer as a physician in low income free clinics in the Twin Cities. James’ greatest joys in life came from serving his patients and spending time with his wife Isabel at their summer home in Door County, WI, where he was an accomplished sailor on Lake Michigan. He is remembered as a loving husband and father, greatly respected by family, colleagues, and friends.
