Nadey Hakim, M.D., Ph.D., receives Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur from France

Nadey Hakim, M.D., Ph.D. (S ’88) (above, center), has received the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur from the French government. The award, established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, is the highest French order for civil merits for non-French citizens. Dr. Hakim received the award from the French ambassador at the French residence in London.

Dr. Hakim is a general, transplant and bariatric surgeon. He has performed more than 2,000 transplants, including London’s first pancreas transplant in 1995 and the world’s first double hand-and-forearm transplant. He is the former world president of the International College of Surgeons, and former president of the Transplantation Section of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Dr. Hakim was born in Beirut, Lebanon. He received his medical degree from Paris Descartes University in France and his Ph.D. from the University of London in England. He completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education. He is in private practice in London.
