Mayo Clinic expands sports medicine facility in Minneapolis

Mayo Clinic is expanding its services, space and other capabilities at its sports medicine facility in downtown Minneapolis to meet the growing demand for its expertise. The expansion will increase capacity for services including orthopedics, primary care, physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R), and radiology.

Since October 2014 Mayo Clinic has leased 22,000-square-feet of space in downtown Minneapolis. The expansion project will add 16,000-square-feet of leased space. Construction is expected to begin in late April 2017.

“The project builds on our commitment to patients in the Twin Cities area by providing more convenient and accessible sports medicine services,” says Edward Laskowski, M.D. (PMR ’90), Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and co-director of Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine along with Michael Stuart, M.D. (OR ’88), Department of Orthopedic Surgery. “This expansion allows us to serve our patients better by tapping Mayo Clinic’s expertise, cutting-edge technology, research and educational capabilities.”

Sports medicine expansion specifics

The expansion includes:

  • 15 new patient exam rooms
  • Additional capacity for services from orthopedic, primary care and PM&R sports specialists. Specialized clinics include regenerative medicine, cartilage restoration, hip arthroscopy, multi-ligament knee reconstruction, injury prevention and athlete performance training
  • Additional sports medicine physician staff
  • A Multitom Rax, an advanced robotic X-ray system that incorporates cone beam CT, 3-D capabilities, and fluoroscopy
  • A dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry system to measure bone density and body composition
  • A second suite for musculoskeletal ultrasound and regenerative medicine procedures such as platelet-rich plasma and bone marrow aspirate concentrate injections, and other ultrasound-guided procedures
  • A biomechanics and movement analysis laboratory for research

Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine also is adding PM&R sports medicine fellowship in Minneapolis. During the next two years, four physical therapists trained in sports medicine will join Mayo Clinic’s staff in Minneapolis.
