Richard Ehman, M.D. (R-D ’85), Division of Diagnostic Radiology in the Department of Radiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, was recognized as one of 175 National Academy of Inventors fellows for 2016, the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors whose work has been judged to have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and welfare of society.

Dr. Ehman was a pioneer in the development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology, and his inventions have revolutionized the MRI field since the 1980s. In recent years he helped develop magnetic resonance elastography (MRE).

Dr. Ehman has a joint appointment in the Department of Physiology and Biomedical Engineering and is the Blanche R. and Richard J. Erlanger Professor of Medical Research and a Professor of Radiology. He completed a clinical fellowship at Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education in 1985.
