Philip Karsell, M.D. receives inaugural Mayo Clinic Distinguished Emeritus Award
Philip Karsell, M.D. (R-D ’71), received the inaugural Mayo Clinic Distinguished Emeritus Award in November 2016. The award recognizes an Emeriti Staff member for contributions during retirement to education, academic productivity or humanitarian efforts.
Dr. Karsell retired from the Department of Radiology in 1997. Since then he has made substantial humanitarian and educational contributions including providing medical care in Haiti and several other countries. He also provides free medical care through the Salvation Army in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Karsell is president of the Rochester Rotary Foundation, and he developed a program to explore spirituality at Rochester’s Calvary Episcopal Church.
Dr. Karsell is an assistant professor of radiology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
