Dean’s Recognition Awards presented by Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and School of Medicine

Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Mayo Clinic School of Medicine select Dean’s Recognition Award recipients each year. The 2017 recipients are:

Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

Stephen Riederer, Ph.D. (R-D ’88), professor of radiology and physiology and biomedical engineering; director, Mayo Clinic Magnetic Resonance Research Laboratory, Department of Radiology

Dr. Riederer was selected for his dedicated service as a member of the leadership of the Biomedical Engineering and Physiology graduate track and for his role as a graduate student mentor, director of a training grant proposal supporting graduate education, and advocate with the Mayo Clinic Research Committee.

He has taught courses in the physics and engineering of medical imaging, including MRI, to hundreds of students since 1984. In 2016 he received the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Teacher of the Year Award. Students say his MRI systems courses are among the best they have taken at Mayo Clinic.

Mayo Clinic School of Medicine

William Freeman, M.D. (MED ’81, I ’84, CV ’87), Division of Cardiovascular Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine, professor of medicine

Dr. Freeman was recognized for his outstanding contributions toward further Mayo Clinic School of Medicine’s vision to educate the physician leaders of tomorrow in patient-centered, science-driven, team-based, high-value health care. He has been a consultant at Mayo Clinic in Rochester for 25 years and now practices at Mayo Clinic in Arizona.

He has been involved in cardiovascular education at the institutional, national and international levels for almost three decades. He has been course director of the circulation block curriculum in Mayo Clinic School of Medicine since 2007, and is a member of the Admissions, Curriculum and Executive Admissions committees.

Dr. Freeman received Teacher of the Year awards for the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases from the Mayo Fellows’ Association in 2012 and 2007. He has received the Outstanding Teach of the Year Award from the Cardiovascular Fellowship Program six times.
