Dr. Steve Matson was born and grew up in Minnesota. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BS degree in Microbiology Magna Cum Laude. He was accepted to Mayo Medical School and graduated in 1983. He completed a pediatric residency at The University of Iowa and did a fellowship in Adolescent Medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He has spent over 35 years providing health care for high-risk adolescents in an academic setting. He was the first recipient of the Founders of Adolescent Medicine Award. This is a national award in recognition of programs and services for adolescents presented by National American Academy of Pediatrics. He was the Chief of Adolescent Medicine at Jacksonville, Florida as well as at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. In Ohio in 2008 the Opioid Epidemic hit, and he started a Medication Assisted Treatment Program for Adolescents and Young Adults with Opioid Use Disorder. In 2012 he became one of the first pediatricians to be board certified in Addiction Medicine. Since that time, he was doing Adolescent Medicine and Addiction Medicine trying to prevent adolescents from becoming addicted to drugs. His career interests have included incarcerated youth and youth with substance abuse problems, sexually transmitted diseases and treating adolescents for anxiety, depression and insomnia. In 2020 he accepted his position as Full Professor of Adolescent Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and now is working full time with telehealth and being in Mississippi for a week every month.
