Alexander Shin, M.D. (HAND ’97), awarded a two-year grant, Mayo Clinic Rochester

Alexander Shin, M.D. (HAND ’97), Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, has been awarded a two-year, $400,000 grant from Regenerative Medicine Minnesota, a statewide bipartisan initiative. His project “Modulating the Local Microenvironment of Nerve Regeneration With Cellular Components” is aimed at improving nerve reconstruction surgery. Dr. Shin’s team will study whether treating donor nerves with stem cells, immunosuppressants and exosomes would improve muscle function and assist in repairing nerve defects. Recognizing the need for a new approach to healthcare, Minnesota lawmakers established Regenerative Medicine Minnesota a decade ago. This state funded initiative is focused on advancing regenerative medicine in research, technology, education and patient care. Dr. Shin is a professor of orthopedics, regenerative medicine and neurosurgery in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
