Bjoerg Thorsteinsdottir, M.D., receives Denis A. Cortese, M.D., and Donna H. Cortese Innovation Award in the Science of Health Care Delivery
Bjoerg Thorsteinsdottir, M.D. (I ’05), Division of Community Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, received the fifth annual Denis A. Cortese, M.D., and Donna H. Cortese Innovation Award in the Science of Health Care Delivery. Dr. Thorsteinsdottir’s research centers on shared decision-making for advanced therapies in a diverse set of patients with chronic kidney disease. In previous research supported by an NIH K23 award, Dr. Thorsteinsdottir developed an iteratively revised decision aid for use with this patient population. Funding from the Cortese Innovation Award will enable her to adapt the decision aid design to an iPad format, and further pilot testing and refinement of the tool for clinical practice with the aim to prevent kidney failure by identifying patients most at risk of developing end-stage kidney disease. Dr. Thorsteinsdottir is an associate professor of medicine and an assistant professor of biomedical ethics in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
