Collin Costello, M.D. (TY ’19, DERM ’22), Department of Dermatology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, received a 2023 Decentralized Clinical Trials award from the Mayo Clinic Decentralized Clinical Trials team, in partnership with Research and the Clinical Trials Strategy and Governance team. This initiative aims to establish digital products, personnel and processes to support research teams. In the project, “Decentralize Tele-Dermatology (TD) Platform for Differentiation Between Benign and Malignant Cutaneous Neoplasms,” Dr. Costello is conducting a prospective observation cohort study aimed at training, validating and finalizing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based image analysis tool to evaluate suspicious skin lesions that, in the current standard of care, are biopsied during regular appointments. Through a decentralized model, Dr. Costello and his team will accrue patients from diverse communities to address this bias in the AI model. Dr. Costello is an assistant professor of dermatology in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
