Mark Sherman, M.D.

Mark Sherman, M.D. (QHS ’16), has been named Florida Investigator of the Year, a prestigious Mayo Clinic award presented annually to recognize research excellence and significant advances that have made a lasting impact on various fields of study. Dr. Sherman is a cancer biologist, a professor of epidemiology and a professor of laboratory medicine and pathology. He has contributed to groundbreaking cancer research and led translational science that continues to advance patient care and cancer prevention. Dr. Sherman is internationally recognized for advancing the use of molecular pathology in population-based cancer studies. His innovative work has clarified the origins and biological behavior of gynecologic and breast cancers, transforming understanding of disease mechanisms and prevention. His research programs have produced landmark findings in postpartum-associated breast cancer, endometrial cancer early detection and benign breast disease — paving the way for precision prevention strategies. He is the principal investigator on multiple NIH and Department of Defense (DOD) grants focused on developing biomarkers of breast cancer risk and integrating pathology, radiology and genetics to refine risk prediction. His innovative work on tampon-based methods for detecting endometrial cancer exemplifies translational research that bridges the gap between discovery and clinical application.
