Samuel Sarmiento, M.D., pursues MPH/MBA, research fellowship and stint at NBC News

Samuel Sarmiento, M.D. (PRES ’14), is pursuing an MPH/MBA degree at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and a research fellowship in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As part of the MPH/MBA program, he also is a completing a medical fellowship at NBC News in New York City. “They check factual information with me, and I research health news stories and write about various health topics for their websites. I also vet studies with medical experts. I’ve learned that TV is interested in what sells. The ‘Today’ show is interested in popular science that appeals to a large audience. ‘Nightly News’ is interested in ‘breakthrough’ research — often low-evidence — and ongoing stories, such as the Zika outbreak. It’s good that they work with medical fellows because they get very excited about studies, and it’s important that the research is presented with certain caveats.”
