Shaji Kumar, M.D. (I ’99, HEMO ’03), Division of Hematology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, received a 2023 Decentralized Clinical Trials award from the Mayo Clinic Decentralized Clinical Trials team, in partnership with Research and the Clinical Trials Strategy and Governance team. This initiative aims to establish digital products, personnel and processes to support research teams. Dr. Kumar’s project, “The Role of the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment in Elderly Patients with Multiple Myeloma: A Single Center Prospective Study,” will evaluate the association between a baseline comprehensive geriatric assessment and treatment toxicity during the first four cycles of treatment, and the patient-reported outcomes in patients who are older and have multiple myeloma. Dr. Kumar’s study will use remote capabilities to replace in-hospital visits with telehealth visits and assessments. Dr. Kumar is the Mark and Judy Mullins Professor of Hematologic Malignancies and a professor of medicine in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
