Gerardo Colon-Otero, M.D.

Mayo Clinic School of Medicine leadership presents an annual  Distinguished Service Award to an educator or leader who exemplifies exceptional education and service to the medical school. The 2017 recipient is Gerardo Colon-Otero, M.D. (I ’82, HEM ’84).

Dr. Colon-Otero was selected to honor his commitment to excellent in medical school education and his role in developing and overseeing superb third- and fourth-year clinical experiences. He is commended for his key role in developing Mayo’s Florida medical school campus and ensuring an outstanding experience for medical students. He has a longstanding commitment to education that includes serving as fellowship director and associate program director of Mayo Clinic hematology/oncology, internal medicine and nurse practitioner training programs.

Dr. Colon-Otero is a consultant in the Division of Hematology/Oncology in the Department of Internal Medicine, professor of medicine and associate dean of Mayo Clinic School of Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Florida.

He has received awards including Community Service Award, Mayo Clinic Department of Medicine; Teacher of the Year Award, Mayo Clinic Hematology/Oncology, Internal Medicine Residency Program; Distinguished Educator Award, Mayo Clinic in Florida; Course Director of the Year, Mayo Clinic School of Continuing Medical Education; and Faculty Recognition Award, Mayo Clinic School of Medicine.
