The 2017 Mayo Fellows’ Association Humanitarian was presented to Lewis Roberts, M.B., Ch.B., Ph.D.   (I ’95, GI ’98), Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Mayo Clinic in Rochester.  The annual awards celebration for Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education was hosted by the school, Mayo Fellows’ Association and Mayo Clinic Alumni Association.

The award recognizes a member of the Mayo Clinic community who has made significant, enduring contributions to humanity through charitable activities, indigent care, community service or other humanitarian projects.

Dr. Roberts is president of Africa Partners Medical, a nonprofit organization founded in 2001 and focused on health care delivery in Africa. The group’s goal is to empower African medical personnel to improve the health of people in Africa through regular updates in medical advances and provision of medical supplies. Dr. Roberts spends significant time in Africa volunteering his expertise to train providers and advance the quality of medical care in his continent of birth. His efforts have facilitated the training of thousands of African health care workers.
