Mayo team wins nVIDIA Global Impact Award for deep learning to predict brain tumor genomics with MRI
A Mayo Clinic team led by Bradley Erickson, M.D., Ph.D. (BPHY ’89, MDPD ’89, R-D ’93, R-NEU ’94), Department of Radiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, won the nVIDIA Global Impact Award for their work using deep learning to predict brain tumor genomics early using MRI.
In their work, the Mayo team described the use of advanced machine learning methods that can predict several important genomics markers for brain tumors with accuracy that is similar to pathology.
Dr. Erickson is one of the leading experts on the applications of deep learning to medical images. He stresses that while many investigators have focused on computers replacing radiologists, the greatest potential may be for computers to identify patterns not recognized by humans and significantly add to the value of radiology in overall patient care.
