Anthony Fons III, M.D. (N ’60)

Anthony LFons, III, M.D., beloved husband of Mary (Barbour) Fons, passed away on Sunday, March 19, 2017. DrFons was born November 8, 1931 in St. Louis, MO., son of Anthony LFons, II and Edith Davis Fons, later moving with his family to Oxnard, CA. He was a graduate of Stanford University and Yale School of Medicine. DrFons practiced medicine as an attending psychiatrist at Hartford Hospital and the Institute of Living from 1965 until his retirement in 2014. As a young resident, he was widely credited with saving many lives during the Hartford Hospital fire in 1961. He was dedicated to his patients, and was a teacher and friend to many. Besides his wife Mary, whom he married in 1978, he leaves his son Anthony LFons, IV of Farmington; his daughter Brett Martin of Bolton; stepsons Stephen Bigler of Austin, TX and William Bigler of West Hartford; and stepdaughter Diane Whatley of Stratton, VT. He also leaves thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Stanley Fons, M.D. Nothing gave Tony greater joy than spending time with his family and embraced his extended family as his own. The Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center of Avon is in care of the arrangements. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
