1940 - 2020

Byrn Williamson Jr., M.D. (RD ’75),

Dr.  Byrn Williamson, age 79, died Thursday, March 26, 2020, in Vero Beach, Florida.  Born in Birmingham, Alabama, on April 1, 1940, the son of Dr. Byrn and Katherine Baxter Williamson, he graduated from Baylor University in 1962 and from Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1966.  He interned at the University of Kentucky and began a residency in surgery at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota in 1968.

After serving in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War, he returned to Mayo Clinic for a residency in radiology.  He did a year of training at University College Hospital in London and joined the radiology department of the Mayo Clinic in 1975.  He specialized in GU radiology and served as vice chairman of the departmental in two administrations.

A committed Christian, Dr. Williamson considered his service to his church and broader community to be of paramount importance.  He was a member of Rochester Covenant Church and served as Church Chairman, chairman of the board of deacons, Sunday School teacher, personnel committee, and small group facilitator.

A long time interest was being on the working Board of Directors for Marble Retreat in Colorado, a Christian retreat center primarily for the clergy and their families.

He is survived by Anita, his wife of 54 years, son Dr. Eric Williamson (Mary Jo), daughter Janet Coile (Freddie), and grandchildren Alex Williamson, Katherine Williamson, Josiah Coile, Eden Grace Coile, Benjamin Coile, and Bethany Coile.

He is remembered with love and gratitude for a life of quiet leadership, strong faith, integrity, wisdom, and generosity of spirit.

A verse he had highlighted in his Bible is Psalm 27:14 “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; yea, wait for the Lord.
