1933 - 2015

David B. P’Pool, Jr., M.D. (DERM 1968)

Dr. David Bruce P’Pool, Jr. died peacefully on October 5, 2015. Dr P’Pool was born in Nashville, TN on May 28, 1933.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Bruce P’Pool, Sr. and Stella Choate P’Pool.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Gibson P’Pool (Shocky) and his two daughters, Elizabeth P’Pool Coble (Les) and Martha P’Pool Shy (Robert), and five grandchildren: Olivia Reid Coble, Stella Claire Coble, Leslie Daviss Coble, Jr., Charlotte Marie Shy and Genevieve Elizabeth Shy.

Dr. P’Pool’s early education included Peabody Demonstration School and Duncan Prepatory School for Boys with graduation from McCallie Military School, Chattanooga, TN. After high school graduation, he attended the University of the South, Sewanee and went on to graduate from Vanderbilt University with a BA degree. Following his graduation from Vanderbilt, he entered the US Army and was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston. After completing his military service, he pursued a graduate degree in Zoology from University of Tennessee Knoxville. The following year, he entered the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis, TN where he earned his M.D. He went on to complete his Internship, Fellowship and Residency in Dermatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Dr. P’Pool and his family returned to Nashville, where he practiced Dermatology for over 30 years in private practice before joining the staff at Vanderbilt Medical Center.

Dr. P’Pool was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity; a long time board Member of the Middle Tennessee Chapter of the Pony Club of America; He served in the early organization of Saddle Up, a recreational therapeutic riding program. He also served on the Board of Friends of Warner Parks; was a member of the Exchange Club of Nashville (ECON) and served on the Alumni Council of McCallie School.

Dr. P’Pool was a member of the Hillsboro Hounds Hunt Club where he served as Master of the Hounds. His most passionate sport and pastime was riding his horses and gathering with friends for the Hunt Meets.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 9, 2015. Visitation with the family will be from noon until 2 p.m., in the Cheek House. A private graveside burial will be at Mt Olivet Cemetery following the service.

The family would like to thank Charles Moore, Jr. for his care of Dr. P’Pool and continued support of the family. The family also appreciates the dedication of Dr. Craig Sussman, the doctors and staff of the Vanderbilt MICU, Rose Pickens and Hattie Burns.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Harpeth Hall School, Oak Hill School or McCallie School, Chattanooga, TN.
