John H. Epstein, M.D.

December 29, 1926 – January 23, 2018

John Epstein passed away on the morning of January 23, 2018. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Alice; his daughter Janice and her husband Aaron; his daughter Beverly and her husband Jim; his daughter-in-law Carol; and his grandchildren Amanda and Peter. He is preceded in death by his son Norman (Nick).

He was born and raised in San Francisco, California, attended college at UC Berkeley, medical school at UCSF, and dermatology residency at the Mayo Clinic. After residency he returned to San Francisco and joined his father, Norman Epstein, M.D., in private practice in dermatology in 1956, all the while performing bench research at UCSF, and serving as volunteer faculty at UCSF teaching dermatology residents, thereby fostering the field of dermatology for generations to come.

Although he had a busy career, he was a devoted and loving husband and father and even passed on the dermatology gene to his daughter Beverly, who joined him in his practice in 1989. He loved what he did and continued in private practice and teaching residents for over 60 years, until the fall of 2017 when his health forced him to retire.
