WOLFORD John L. (Joe) Wolford, M.D., born on June 25, 1925, died on September 23, 2017, at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Wolford is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary R. Wolford. He had seven children: Mary Jo Gleason (John F. Gleason – deceased); Janie Wolford; John L. Wolford, Jr., M.D. (Elizabeth); Thomas L. Wolford, M.D. (Caryn Vorster); Annie Licandro (deceased); Sara Porter (D. Whayne Porter); and Robert W. Wolford, M.D. (Candace). Dr. Wolford also is survived by 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Dr. Wolford was a veteran of World War II. He served in the Army Medical Corps from 1944 to 1946 in the European Theater of Operations. Dr. Wolford graduated from Saint Louis University School of Medicine and was a fellow in cardiology at the Mayo Clinic – Rochester, Minnesota. For over 40 years, he practiced medicine in Louisville, Kentucky. Since moving to Jacksonville in 2008, Dr. Wolford wrote and published three memoirs about his early life and medical career. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 28, 2017, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 435 1st Avenue North, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250. On September 30, 2017, a private interment will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made either to Legacy of Faith Church Building Fund at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 435 1st Avenue North, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250; or Conventual Franciscan Friars, Development Office, 103 St. Francis Blvd., Mount St. Francis, IN 47146.
