Nolan Karstaedt, M.D. (RD ’89)

AUGUST 30, 1948 – MAY 1, 2023

Karstaedt, Nolan, radiologist and mortal enemy of clay pigeons, passed away on May 1st, 2023 at age 74. He was born on August 30th, 1948 in Springs, South Africa. He graduated as a doctor at the University of Witwatersrand in November 1971 and emigrated to the United States in 1977 with his new wife Marcelle. Having completed his training in America at Washington University; he joined the faculty at Wake Forest Medical School in 1979. There he was one of three organizers of the seminal conference on the medical possibilities of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. In 1989 Nolan moved to Jacksonville and joined the Mayo Clinic where he worked until retiring in 2019. Later in life, he encountered the clay pigeon sport of “Sporting Clays” to which he became happily addicted, and was never happier than out on the grounds. He leaves behind a beloved wife, two children, his mother, and sister. He is deeply mourned by all who knew him.

A graveside service for Nolan will be held Thursday, May 4, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Oaklawn Cemetery, 4801 SAN JOSE BLVD, JACKSONVILLE, FL 32207.
