Quentin Knauer, M.D. (S ’62)

Dr. Quentin F. Knauer passed away unexpectedly and peacefully early on Thursday, September 8, 2016. He had looked forward to returning home to Cambridge on Friday, September 9, but he was called Home a day early.

Dr. Knauer practiced medicine as a physician in Family Practice, General Surgery and Obstetrics in Cambridge, where he and his wife Mary have lived for 50 years. He practiced with the Ohio Physicians. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons and Physicians for Social Responsibility.

Quentin grew up in Rockville Centre, Long Island, NY and graduated from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. He attended Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and worked with the East Harlem Protestant Parish, where he met his beloved wife of 64 years, Mary Alice Bellerjeau Knauer.

Quentin served in the US Army medical corps during the Korean War. Afterwards he attended medical school at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed a one-year internship followed by a 2-year residency in pathology at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia; and a 4-year residency in general surgery at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital. He served as a physician in rural Hinckley, Minnesota for 2 years, before joining the Southeastern Ohio Physicians, Inc. in Cambridge in 1966.

Dr. Knauer lived and shared his faith each day by quiet, humble example. He loved serving individuals and families in the community through his medical vocation. He especially loved delivering mothers and bringing their new babies into the world—over 1,000.

In 1977, Quentin and Mary’s daughter, Mary Elsa, died in a traffic accident and they established the Mary Elsa Knauer Music Scholarship at Cambridge High School for students continuing their musical studies in college. Sixty-one students have been awarded the scholarship since 1978 and many have entered music vocations influencing the lives of thousands of additional young people in music.

After retirement, Quentin was able to give his time to activities he loved: music, church and civic activities, gardening, the environment (trees), lay ministry, Christian mission and service, and global peace. Quentin was an advocate for youth. He worked with Rev. Ron Fleming and others to establish the Teen Canteen at Second Presbyterian Church to provide breakfast, games and a safe haven before school and tutoring after school for students at the Cambridge Junior High. Quentin and Mary have also been active members on the board of Young Life.

Quentin was a longtime member of the Cambridge Singers (most recently “It’s A Wonderful World”, solo, 2016). Dr. Knauer also loved participating weekly in the Living Word Outdoor Drama, playing the role of Joseph of Arimathæa. He also played the Rabbi in Fiddler on the Roof with the Cambridge Performing Arts Center.

Some of Quentin’s other affiliations include: Cambridge Rotary (chairman of the Environmental and Ecology Committee fundraising for and leading the tree planting and seedling distribution annually to 7,000 school children; and Adopt a Highway, roadside cleanup); Unity Presbyterian Church (Choir, Sunday School teacher, Elder/Deacon); local ecumenical service including Guernsey County Council of Churches, contributing writer to the Daily Jeffersonian; Salvation Army (summer lunches and bell ringers); Christian Church Thanksgiving Dinner volunteer; Guernsey County Young Life; civic volunteer activities such as Cambridge Area Beautification Council -Yard of the Month; Cambridge Developmental Center board; local historical preservation committee; the Muskingum Valley Council Boy Scouts Distinguished Citizens committee, Ohio Department of Natural Resources; and local and global mission including men’s bible study, Habitat for Humanity, and mission-related trips, to Thailand, Brazil, and South Africa (Habitat Carter Build).

Besides serving his community, Quentin had a unique sense of humor and enjoyed sharing a joke to lighten the mood. Quentin and Mary treasure their Cambridge community friends and extended family. With their family, they thank everyone who continued to pray for Quentin over the past month for his healing, and who sent words of encouragement, appreciation and love that lifted Quentin’s (and family’s) spirits and gave him strength and joy.

Quentin was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy; parents, Frederick and Elsa (all three passed before he was 20 years old); grandparents; a daughter, Mary Elsa Knauer; mother-, father- and sister-in-law.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Alice Bellerjeau Knauer; his daughters, Dorothy J., Elizabeth, and Kathryn Knauer Roberts; his grandchildren, Christopher Knauer Roberts, Alicen Marie Roberts, and Olivia Strickland; cousins, Andy and Sue and Jean Larson, Dorothy Hull and family, and Harriett Bellerjeau and family.

Memorial visitation hours will be observed Friday (September 23, 2016) from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Thorn-Black Funeral Home, Cambridge. In accordance with his wishes, Dr. Knauer donated his body to his alma mater, Case Western Reserve Medical School.
